1st IEEE International Peer-to-Peer for Handheld
                              Devices Workshop

Peer-to-Peer overlay networks have gained tremendous public attention during the recent years. Peer-to-peer (P2P) content sharing systems have enabled Internet users to freely share digital content like music files, digital movies and pictures. P2P content sharing is getting more and more popular, especially among the young people who have grown up in the Napster era. However, such a spectacular success of the P2P systems would not have been possible without technological changes in the ICT industry. Faster residential Internet connections, more powerful desktops, and cheaper storage have been the main drivers stimulating the P2P growth.

A similar technological change can also be observed in the mobile industry. The introduction of high-capacity 3G and WLAN networks, more powerful handsets with larger memories and multimedia extensions provide good basis for the development of peer-to-peer applications also in the mobile environment.

IEEE P2P HD 2008 will bring together communications and software researchers, engineers and business leaders both from academia and industry to discuss research results, new ideas, and their experiences in the area of mobile P2P communication. The workshop will address challenges related to the deployment of P2P solutions for handheld devices such as mobile phones and PDAs.

The topics of particular interest include:

  • Mobile peer-to-peer SIP communication
  • Mobile peer-to-peer video streaming
  • Mobile peer-to-peer content sharing
  • Security aspects in mobile peer-to-peer applications
  • User experience of mobile peer-to-peer applications
  • Business aspects of peer-to-peer for handheld devices
  • Mobile peer-to-peer APIs
  • Location aware mobile peer-to-peer systems and application
  • Mobile peer-to-peer messaging
  • Mobile peer-to-peer gaming
  • Measurement studies in mobile P2P networks
  • Social networks in the mobile environment
  • Charging of mobile peer-to-peer services
  • Persistent storage
  • Battery saving mechanisms in mobile P2P networks
  • Handling churn in mobile P2P networks
  • Nat/firewall traversal issues in mobile P2P networks
  • Architecture and platforms for mobile P2P computing
