Abstract: This presentation gives some of the historical background to the development of synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) with a brief explanation of why it is now very different from its electromagnetic precursor; synthetic aperture radar (SAR). There are many SAR and SAS image reconstruction algorithms. The most interesting from a historical perspective is the optical reconstruction of the Seasat SAR data of the mid 1970s. Now all image reconstruction is performed digitally, mostly with efficient block processing algorithms and one of these, the range-Doppler algorithm, is demonstrated showing what to look for in some of the intermediate steps. Some simulated images are shown but most of the presentation concentrates on SAS images from experimental data and what information might be found from these images.
